GHK-Cu: The Peptide That Started It All

From an unexpected scientific discovery to one of skincare's most fascinating ingredients.

"Some of the greatest scientific discoveries aren't planned. They begin with a simple question and an unexpected answer."

If you've read our previous articles, you'll know that GHK-Cu is the ingredient that first captured our attention.

In many ways, it's the reason Copper Skin Collective exists.

But what makes this tiny peptide so special?

And where did it actually come from?

The story begins more than fifty years ago—and it has nothing to do with skincare.

It All Started with a Question

Back in 1973, biochemist Dr. Loren Pickart wasn't trying to discover an anti-ageing ingredient.

He was studying something completely different.

His research focused on why older liver tissue behaved differently when it was exposed to blood plasma from younger people.

It was a fascinating question.

Could there be something naturally present in younger blood that helped cells function differently?

As he searched for the answer, he isolated a tiny molecule made up of just three amino acids.

That molecule became known as GHK. When it binds naturally with copper, it forms GHK-Cu—the copper peptide that has since become one of the most researched peptides in skincare.

A Discovery Nobody Was Looking For

This is one of our favourite parts of the story.

Nobody set out to invent a skincare ingredient.

Nobody was trying to create an anti-ageing serum.

The discovery happened because scientists were curious.

It was simply a case of asking questions, following the evidence and being open to wherever the research might lead.

We love that.

Because that's exactly how our own journey began.

It all started with curiosity.

What Exactly Is GHK-Cu?

Let's break the name down.

GHK stands for the three amino acids that make up the peptide:

  • Glycine
  • Histidine
  • Lysine

When this naturally occurring peptide binds with a copper ion, it becomes GHK-Cu.

It's found naturally in the human body, including in blood plasma, saliva and urine, where it forms part of the body's normal biological signalling systems. Researchers have also observed that natural levels tend to decline with age.

Decades of Scientific Interest

What makes GHK-Cu different from many skincare ingredients is its history.

It hasn't just been studied for a few years.

Researchers have been investigating it for more than five decades.

Over that time, studies have explored its role in areas including:

  • Skin biology
  • Tissue repair
  • Wound healing
  • Extracellular matrix remodelling
  • Hair biology
  • Cellular communication

While research is ongoing—and many findings come from laboratory and early clinical studies rather than large-scale clinical trials—the scientific interest surrounding GHK-Cu has remained remarkably consistent for more than fifty years.

Why It Fascinated Us

When we first came across GHK-Cu, we weren't looking to create a skincare brand.

We were simply trying to learn.

The more papers we read...

The more podcasts we listened to...

The more conversations we had...

The more we realised this wasn't just another trending ingredient.

It had a genuine scientific story behind it.

A story that had been unfolding for decades.

That curiosity eventually became an obsession.

And that obsession eventually became Copper Skin Collective.

🧬 Science, Simplified

Think of GHK-Cu as a tiny messenger.

It's made from just three amino acids joined together.

When it binds with copper, it becomes GHK-Cu.

Researchers have spent more than fifty years exploring how this naturally occurring copper peptide participates in biological signalling related to skin and tissue biology.

Sometimes the smallest molecules tell the biggest stories.

💜 What This Means for Your Skin

One of the reasons we chose GHK-Cu as the foundation of our serum wasn't because it was fashionable.

It was because we were inspired by the depth of scientific curiosity surrounding it.

More than fifty years after its discovery, researchers are still studying this remarkable little peptide.

To us, that says something.

It tells us this isn't an ingredient that appeared overnight.

It's one that has continued to earn scientific attention over time.

And that's exactly the kind of ingredient we wanted at the heart of our formula.

Coming Up Next...

Now that you know where GHK-Cu came from, we'll take a closer look at how it works and why researchers continue to explore its role in supporting healthy-looking skin.

We can't wait to share it with you.
